Meanwhile Back in Queens:
“Dear Summer”

Ain’t no summer like a Queens Summer.

I created an original pattern, illustration, and custom letttering for MBIQ’s Summer capsule: “Dear Summer.”

All themes and symbols pay homage to the roots and culture of Queens, NY.

AUGUST 2024

The pattern draws inspiration from the paisleys and swirls of a standard bandana. However, we wanted to weave in finer details to create a story of our own.

Within the design, you’ll spot symbols representing Queens and New York City as a whole, including roses, tulips, wampum shells, and an ode to the iconic New York coffee cup.

The following lockup pays homage to the roots of Queens alludes to the official emblem of the borough itself.

The tulip represents the Dutch and the rose represents the English, held together by Wampum beads, which represent the indigenous peoples of the Eastern Woodlands.

“Queens” custom lettering created as a tribute to the sharpied price tags in NYC bodegas (or “corner stores” or “delis” — we can have an open discussion on which is truly valid).
